There’s something so appealing about escaping into the world of movies. Particularly, romantic movies. And what is the best part? The climax. Where everything falls into place. Be it a guy finally bagging his girl or someone professing his/her love and both finally walking into the sunset of dreams. Over the years, we have come across many such iconic scenes that speak of love, heart-to-heart confessions and proposals… We list down some of the best proposal scenes as a tribute to the Valentine season that celebrates love in all its glory…
1. Dil Toh Pagal Hai :
Director Yash Chopra’s films are known for celebrating love. Dil Toh Pagal Hai is one such gem. The film, which released in 1997, has been able to stay as fresh as ever. Whether it’s the charming Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul, the graceful Madhuri Dixit as Pooja or the bubbly Karisma Kapoor as Nisha, each character is etched in our memories. Such a great movie also had to have an amazing end. Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) end up admitting their feelings towards each other during a play. Shah Rukh Khan is regarded as the King of Romance. And this move that tugged at your heartstrings was a proof of that.
2. Dil Chahta Hai :
It happened 16 years ago. Newbie director Farhan Akhtar came up with Dil Chahta Hai and redefined urban friendships and love. The story of three friends trying to hit an equation in their love lives and sort out the emotional mess around them, wooed the youth. Having said that, the movie was more about friendships than romance. Yet Aamir Khan proposing to Preity Zinta was a new dimension in relationship dynamics. Preity Zinta is about to get married to her long-time fiancé, a possessive and sadistic character. A reticent Aamir Khan, shy of admitting his own feelings, decides to take a risk and let her finally know about his feelings. So, there was Aamir Khan waiting desperately for a reply after his emotional outpour… even as her family watched on. The best part of the proposal was its audacity and realness. A man not bothered by anything around him except professing his love… just desperate to have her after coming to terms with his own misconceptions about himself .
3. Kal Ho Naa Ho
Kal Ho Naa Ho was a movie that taught us to live life to the fullest and also love to the fullest. The story was about Naina Catherine Kapur (Preity Zinta), a cynical MBA student, who lives in New York City with her widowed mother. Embittered by fate and with the burden of responsibilities, Naina somewhere forgets to enjoy her own life. And then walks in Aman Mehra (Shah Rukh Khan), a person who wins her heart by helping Naina sort out her issues. He loves her too but has cleverly camouflaged his feelings. And when Aman learns about his terminal heart ailment and the limited time he has, he tries to make two close friends Rohit Patel (Saif Ali Khan) and Naina come together. He does not want Naina to once again face a tragedy – his death and get back into the dark abysmal depths of grief and loss once again. Aman even proposes to Naina on behalf of Rohit. The best part was that the diary from which, he was pretending to read about Rohit’s love for Naina was blank. He sacrifices his love for her because he didn’t want her to be left alone after he was gone! His was a love, which went beyond time. Nikhil Advani’s directorial remains a favourite with all SRK fans till date.
4. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was a coming of age romantic drama. It was also the directorial debut of Karan Johar. While the first half revolved around the love triangle between three college students, which included Rahul Khanna played by Shah Rukh Khan, his tomboy friend Anjali Sharma played by Kajol and Tina Malhotra, the prettiest girl in college played by Rani Mukerji. The second half revolved around Rahul Khanna, who has lost his wife Tina and his attempt to reconnect with his best friend and the true love of his life Anjali. He runs into her at a children’s camp, which his daughter is attending. At the camp, he realises that he still has feelings for Anjali and that she was his true love all along. However, getting her back didn’t seem easy as she was about to get married to Aman Mehra (Salman Khan). 8. Band Baaja Baraat
This was Ranveer Singh’s debut movie. It was important for Anushka Sharma too as she had to prove her worth after coming from a successful debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The movie, directed by Maneesh Sharma, was about Bitoo Sharma (Ranveer) and Shruti (Anushka), who start a wedding planning agency. While planning wedding for others the two grow close. Shruti falls deeply in love with Bitoo but unfortunately Bitoo does not feel the same about her. Eventually, Bitoo does realise that Shruti and he are more than just business partners, they are partners in matters of the heart. He goes to Shruti and pours his heart out in an emotional speech. “Jisse vyapaar karo, usse kabhi na pyaar karo (don’t fall in love with people you work with)!” is a line which is used very often. But the climax is just the opposite. They eventually realise that love is a serious business after all!
9. Jab We Met
Jab We Met is one of the most iconic love stories of all time. Even though the story wasn’t unusual, the way it was told by director Imtiaz Ali and the also amazing performances by Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor helped the movie achieve it’s cult status. It was a love story between two completely opposite people, the free-spirited Geet Dhillon and the sad and silent Aditya Kashyap. This was also Shahid’s and Kareena’s last film together as the then real-life pair broke up during it. Jab We Met’s biggest strength were probably its quirky one liners.
Nalayak, vardi uthake phenk de!
(Thow away your uniform, you useless man)
Tumhe na uthake museum mein rakhna chahiye, ticket lagna chahiye tumhe dekhne ke liye!
(You should be kept in a museum and people who want to see you should be charged an entry fee)
One liners like these interjected so much zest in the movie that it made everyone fall in love with it immediately and still remember them even today.
The climax of the movie showed Geet finally getting the man she had pined for all along – Anshyuman… only to realise that she actually loves Aditya. Aditya, who had by then has accepted his fate of losing the love of his life, sees Geet running towards him to tell him that she loves him. It’s a proposal, a confession he was waiting for.
10. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) is a salute to friendship and also love. It’s the journey of three friends, who go on a road trip and face the highs and lows of life together even as they discover certain truths. It featured Hrithik Roshan (a successful investment banker), Abhay Deol (a wealthy businessman) and Farhan Akhtar (a writer from a modest background) as friends with contrasting personalities. While Farhan is an extrovert and fun loving, Hrithik is serious and an introvert and Abhay simple. Despite these differences, they are the best of friends. They play pranks on each other, have their emotional moments, confide in each other and generally have fun. During their road trip across Spain, they also get another companion in the form of Laila (Katrina Kaif). Arjun (Hrithik) and Laila grow close to each other during the trip. However, both don’t realise that it’s love. When Kabir is leaving, Laila realises that this is the only chance she will get to let Arjun know about her feelings. So, she hops on a bike and chases the car Arjun is in. When Arjun sees her, he immediately stops the car. Without saying a word the two share a very passionate kiss. Well, could there have been a better expression or confession of love?
