Farhan Akhtar turns 44 today which is sometimes hard to believe given his fitness and chiselled physique. We’re sure 25-year-olds will find it tough to compete with his good looks. Besides being one of the most handsome men around, Farhan is also a multi-talented artiste. He can direct, act, sing, write and heck he even has the keen business acumen of a successful producer. Whether it’s massy, classy or sassy, Farhan has a handle on it all. He began his career in the industry with direction and later ventured into other fields of filmmaking. On his birthday, we take a look at 5 reasons why we absolutely love Farhan Akhtar:
1.He’s a modern storyteller
Farhan Akhtar started off his journey as a director with Dil Chahta Hai. On paper, a coming-of-age story about three bachelors faring through love, life and friendship was not new. But something about the film clicked with the audience. The youthful drama is still a joy to watch, even after 16 years. After this, Farhan went on to direct Lakshya starring Hrithik Roshan and Amitabh Bachchan which was a mature look at emotions and ambition. Although the film didn’t set the box-office ablaze, it received an amazing response by the critics. After this, Farhan directed Don (the remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s cult hit) and Don 2 (the sequel and franchise kick-starter) with Shah Rukh Khan featuring in both. The Don franchise scored big at the box-office. Sadly, Farhan hasn’t taken up direction since Don 2. There are rumours that we might soon see him behind the camera again with Don 3. We sure hope these rumours are true as we would love to see Farhan direct more movies that are in-line with modern sensibilities.
2.He’s a performer par excellence
Ever since he began his journey as a filmmaker, fans were always curious about his good looks and whether he would one day make the transition in front of the camera. It had to happen and Farhan made his acting debut with Rock On in 2008. Rock On received an amazing response from the critics as well as the audience.Farhan Akhtar surprised everyone with his wonderful acting and singing in his debut. Later, Farhan also acted in sister Zoya Akhtar’s debut Luck By Chance, where his performance was praised as well. He was also seen in Karthik Calling Karthik opposite Deepika Padukone in which he played an introvert who suffers from a serious psychological disorder. Farhan’s performance in Zoya’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara really put him in the big league. If that wasn’t enough, his superlative efforts in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag cemented his place as a power house performer. Farhan portrayed the role of the legendary athlete Milkha Singh with grit and gumption. The film fared well at the boxoffice and was appreciated by the critics too. His supporting act in Dil Dhadakne Do was a perfect follow up too. Farhan was top-notch in the thriller – drama Wazir with Amitabh Bachchan as well.
3.He was born to sing
Farhan made his singing debut with Rock On too. He sang five spunky songs in the movie –Socha hai, Pichle saat dinon mein, Rock on, Tum ho toh and Sinbad the sailor. Farhan’s singing talent came as a surprise to many of his fans and viewers. After Rock On, he also took to the mic again in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and gave us a fabulous track like Señorita and the soulful elocution of Javed Akhtar’s poem Toh zinda ho tum. Farhan also sang for Rock On 2. He continues to perform at rock concerts regularly for his MARD initiative as well.
He’s a wordsmith!
With Javed Akhtar as his father there’s no surprise that Farhan’s got such a knack for writing. Farhan contributed to the dialogues of movies like Dil Chahta Hai, Rock On, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Don 2, Talaash etc. In our opinion, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is one of his best works so far. The depth in writing played a major role in letting the audience connect with the film and its themes.
His astute business sense:
Farhan Akhtar’s taste in movies is exceptional and his career as a producer justifies it perfectly. Along with his good friend Ritesh Sidhwani, he has the reins of the production company Excel Entertainment. They have an amazing track record. Fukrey and Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd are superb examples of strong content and smart investments. Most producers might not have taken the risk with such movies because they aren’t your typical commercial flicks. They’re not what producers call a safe bet. Well, Farhan isn’t like most producers and the risk he took definitely paid off. He also has produced many other quality films such as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do, Luck By Chance where he’s handled production and creative duties.
Farhan Akhtar also is often seen voicing his opinion for social causes and has his own initiative called MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) whose aim is to increase awareness regarding the challenges women go through in society.
Here’s wishing the multi-talented Farhan Akhtar a very happy birthday!
